How To Steam A Wedding Dress

Updated: Sep 21, 2023

You want your wedding dress to look its absolute best on the big day. After all, your wedding is no small occasion, and after finding and investing in the dress of your dreams, you want it to look as perfect as possible both in-pictures and in-person.

Therefore, knowing how to steam your dress in the best possible way is day-saving information!

We recently shared a steaming demonstration on Instagram, which we’re excited to say has garnered over 75k views and counting - and nearly 1000 likes!

You can watch the video on our YouTube channel for a step-by-step guide: How to steam your wedding dress and other helpful tips

Here's a step-by-step text guide on how to steam your wedding dress:

Use a Handheld Steamer: To steam your wedding dress on the morning of your big day, we recommend using a handheld steamer and using filtered water. Here at Oliver’s Bridal we use the Propress Mini Steamer

Cover Steamer Head With Fabric: Being your wedding day, we advise wrapping the steamer head with a piece of fabric, such as a cotton cloth or a handkerchief. The fabric can be held in place with a hairband. By covering the head of the steamer, incase there are any water droplets, these will be absorbed by the fabric.

Steam Carefully: Glide the steamer directly onto the creases of the gown slowly.

This method will ensure your dress is wrinkle-free and ready for the big day!

This professional steaming technique will prove invaluable on your wedding day. We've also answered some common questions about steaming wedding dresses below:

Does steaming a wedding dress get wrinkles out?

Yes! The heat from the steamer removes pesky wrinkles and creases out of your wedding dress so that your garment can look perfectly fresh on the day.

Can steaming a wedding dress shrink it?

Steaming a wedding dress won’t cause the dress to shrink. Most common wedding fabrics like satin, silk, chiffon, polyester, and tulle are all safe to steam to remove wrinkles and creases.

Should I steam my wedding dress inside out?

We will have steamed your dress from the inside so you should only need to steam the dress from the outside. Turning a garment inside and having to reverse it after having just steamed it can sometimes add more wrinkles!

How Do You Steam A Wedding Dress In A Hotel Room?

Many Brides typically get ready in the hotel before the big day, so you’ll want to ensure you’ve got a steamer with you.

You can call up your hotel to check if they’ve got a steamer you can use in advance of your wedding. However, for reassurance we recommend you bring your own so that you can be 100% sure you're covered on the big day.

When you’re getting ready to steam your dress in the hotel, simply follow our steaming guide like you were at home!

Pro tip: Forgot your steamer? Don’t panic!

The shower can act as a bit of a life saver in this instance. Run a hot shower with the bathroom door closed, and leave the dress on a coat hanger for around 20 minutes. The bathroom will steam up and subsequently de-wrinkle your gown, albeit slowly.

You can hang the garment over the shower rail, though avoid putting it too close to the spray of the shower!

How Long Does It Take For A Steamed Wedding Dress To Dry?

After steaming, your dress may feel slightly damp but this is totally normal.

Allow it to air dry for about 10 minutes before wearing it.

We would suggest you avoid using a hairdryer to speed up the process as you don’t want any excessive heat from the hairdryer to potentially damage the dress.
